The Education Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Sakina Itoo, has announced a significant relief measure for students up to class 9 as the region prepares for a shift in its academic calendar. With the exam schedule moved up to November-December, students will benefit from a reduced syllabus to help them adjust to the earlier exam timeline. This development aims to address the concerns of students and parents and ensure a smooth transition to the new academic schedule.
In a move to align the academic calendar with other regions, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has decided to conduct final exams in November-December instead of the traditional March session. This change is applicable to students from classes 1 to 9, requiring them to adapt to a new timeline that now aligns with the rest of the country’s academic schedule.

- Syllabus Relaxation Announced for Students in Jammu and Kashmir Ahead of November Exams
The shift has prompted the government to offer syllabus relaxation as a way to ease the transition and reduce the pressure on students, who now have a condensed period to cover their course material.
Exams for classes 1 through 9 are scheduled to commence on November 20 and continue until December 5. The Directorate of School Education is coordinating with schools to prepare and release date sheets for each class. The exams will begin with students in Kindergarten, gradually advancing through to class 9, ensuring a smooth and organized exam period across the region.
Classes 10 to 12, however, will continue with the traditional March session exams until further notice, allowing higher-grade students to maintain consistency in their preparation timelines.
In addition to syllabus relaxation, schools are also implementing other measures to ensure the comfort and well-being of students during the cold winter months. With chilly weather setting in, school hours have been adjusted to run from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, allowing students to avoid frigid early morning temperatures. These adjustments come as a proactive response to the region’s typical winter climate and are intended to make exam days more manageable.
The Ministry of Education has also indicated that winter vacations are expected to start in mid-December, following the conclusion of exams. This scheduling aims to provide students with ample rest and recovery time as temperatures continue to drop in the region.
To finalize the extent of syllabus reduction, the Education Ministry will consult with key stakeholders, including educators, school administrators, and representatives of parent associations. This collaborative approach seeks to balance the reduced syllabus with the need for comprehensive learning, ensuring that students continue to meet essential educational standards without being overwhelmed by the accelerated timeline.
